Gmane doesn't use any full email addresses in the
web-accessible archive.  It is also fairly difficult for
spammers to harvest via NNTP.  Computers get blocked when
they try to slurp a ton of articles.

So is any of this more secure than a password-protected
archive for members only?  No, but Gmane solves these
issues really effectively.
