I have some more information on this.

I was running drupal 6.1[23] against postgresql.  I subsequently
noticed that , if I am interpreting the dmesg  output correctly, that
php5_cgi was segfaulting every time I looked at a page:

  denied resource overstep by requesting 4096 for RLIMIT_CORE against
limit 0 for /usr/bin/php5-cgi

Even if the page was displayed correctly, this error message appeared.

I reinstalled a vanilla drupal to see if it was caused by any of the
extra modules I had installed.  This didn't help.

I have changed the site to be drupal against mysql and have not had
any 500 errors since and the above dmesg error no longer appears.
Maybe there is a problem with the php - postgres support?
