Perhaps your SSH connection is dying, or else local firewall settings
on your machine are preventing a connection to the SSH client's SOCKS
port? Try "telnet localhost 8080" locally to test that the SOCKS
server is up. I suspect the former though. If so, and the culprit is a
firewall or NAT box that is killing your connection, I believe that
ssh has an option for keepalive (sends a packet once in a while to
keep the connection open).
