My sysadmin friend was in favour of software RAID largely because the admin tools are generic, i.e. not controller-specific, obviating the need to pull out the manual when things need tweaking. He didn't seem concerned about performance. (The 500+ first years at the site he works at used to provide a test load during the development of Ext3 and NFS4 in the Linux kernel IIRC.)

So, humbly, I propose that the sysadmins at HCoop go with whatever they think is easier to admin.

I for one would take the extra disk space, if all other opinions are equal.
