Well, first of all, there are many providers of SVN and CVS services.
I.E., sourceforge.net, savannah.gnu.org,
www.berlios.de (pretty popular for SVN), and many others -- check
http://subversion.tigris.org/project_links.html "Sites that Offer
Subversion Hosting"
That said, if the admins think that our little engine that could would
be able to deal with subversion traffic, I'm really for it. It'd be
helpful to foster a development atmosphere instead of just websites with
specific objectives. However, I wouldn't advertise the server being
capable of hosting subversion repositories, as then we'd probably end up
with too many people wanting in.
SVN is pretty secure -- we can set it up to require (MANDATE) svn+ssh
with keypairs for modifications to repositories. But can a repository
meant for public fetching work at the same time without authentication?
How expensive is SVN when it comes to memory and CPU? I imagine it
isn't anything to worry about, but it is something to consider. In
general, we only have 34mb of physical memory left at any given time.
The less we force things into swap, the more responsive Fyodor will be
for mission critical services.
Anyway, SVN is great. If Fyodor has the resources, lets do it. If it
doesn't, then let those other fine repositories take care of those
needs. Perhaps we can setup a beneficial relationship with one of the
lesser-known repositories.
