[HCoop-Help] HCoop IRC

Can anyone help me get connected to the HCoop IRC channel? I've never
done IRC or freenode before and it doesn't seem particularly
non-techie user-friendly. I found this page
(http://www.irchelp.org/irchelp/new2irc.html), which indicates that I
should download mIRC (yes I am using Windows, please don't judge me).
Now its telling me I have to pay $20. Is this right? Thank you.
