[HCoop-Discuss] Mobile e-mail

Is anyone else out there totally frustrated with the mobile e-mail
options out there?

Blackberry is just a terrible solution. It only supports proprietary
e-mail systems! How hard would it be for Blackberry Enterprise Server
to support IMAP?? Not very. I understand that IMAP, especially over
SSL, may be too "chatty" for most bandwidth-conservative wireless
providers. It would be nice if there were some FOSS
(reverse-engineered?) implementation of the Blackberry Server that would
plug into Postfix or my Maildir and perform the essential "PUSH" and
synchronization functions. Such a program would be hopelessly redundant
and would only be confirming to the loathed phone companies' desire for
a substandard, incompatible system.

I could get a Palm and use IMAP over SSL, but the only GSM model is
pretty old and Palm OS is a dying platform. Also, the companies charge
you more than double than a Blackberry plan for a data plan that will
support an IMAP+SSL setup.

I have hope for the Access Linux Platform, especially since Orange in
the UK has now thrown their weight behind it. But that will take years
to mature.

It is shocking that mobile e-mail is in such a primative,
non-standards-compliant state. I really wish Hcoop could also securely
serve my mobile e-mail.

Frank
